Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Review: Even though I really don't like movies that are divided into parts that means you have to wait many months between them, I wanted to see the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as soon as possible. And now I have. I liked it, and in the way that I like anything that has to do with Harry Potter, either if it's the books or the movies. They are charming and I enjoy them as long as they last. But then I have almost forgotten about them 5 minutes after I'm done. So they will never reach any kind of best of all times lists. But nonetheless, I like them for what they are and I look forward to watch part 2 in July next year.

Review: Buckets of blood, boobs and bad campy humour. That's Piranha for you. Sounds like a crappy movie? Well, this ain't really meant to be the movie of the week or Schindler's List. It is a bad movie but in a good kind of way. If you sit down to watch this, you're getting exactly what you expect. Nothing more, nothing less. Lots of blood and lots of boobs.

Review: Last night Winter's Bone won the grand prize at Stockholm International Film Festival so it was quite a bit of anticipation that I sat down to watch it today. And I wasn't disappointed. The movie was really good and the cast was amazing, especially Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role. It's a very strong and brutal movie in it's purity and it's one of those movies that stays with you. I recommend it strongly.

Today's Schedule

Up at 9. Eating breakfast while watching the latest episode of The Simpsons. Check and answer email before watching the first episode of Teachers. Take a break. Look for work, do dishes and a few other things around the apartment. Back to to sofa to watch the latest episode of The Walking Dead before digging into Winter's Bone. Around this time it's time for some food. After that it's either time for another episode of Teachers or the episode of Misfits from last week that I haven't got around to see yet. Then I might see if I can find something fun to watch or else I end off with the latest episode of Boardwalk Empire followed by the end of Piranha that I began watching last night. Reading a bit of Kevin Smith before going to bed. Exciting life, eh?

Review: I'm starting of this Sunday with an easily digestible high school comedy. For some reason they are always kind of fun to watch. Not that I ever think they will make better ones than Breakfast Club or Can't Buy Me Love, but still, it's easy entertainment. By the way, now that I was thinking of high school flicks I just realized that I want to see Gregory's Girl again. Have to make a mental note about that. Well, back to Easy A. First off, I dig Emma Stone. She's always fun to watch. There's nothing original about the movie, but that is part of the charm with these kinds of movies. With that being said I have to say that Easy A was easy entertainment. Just what I needed for a Sunday morning. And now I all of a sudden begin humming "easy like a Sunday morning", seeing the really crappy Faith No More video in front of my eyes. God, today I'm rambling. Peace out!

Review: And now it's time for the second movie tip from Pippa, and it's yet another Australian flick. And another dark one. And most importantly, another good one. This one is about 17-year old J and his struggle to survive inside a family totally ingulfed in criminal destruction. It's dark, but at the same time warm and human. A good script and a perfect casting makes this another movie I highly recommend.

Review: It's always nice when people around suggests movies for me to watch. Because then you sometime stumble across movies you perhaps would miss out on otherwise. Such as Van Diemen's Land. My Australian friend Pippa suggested this one and I'm really glad she did. The movie is based on true story about Alexander Pearce, an infamous Australian convict and his escape with seven other convicts. During their escape from a penal settlement on Van Diemen's Land (nowadays known as Tasmania) their initial enthusiasm and joy of being free soon changes into cannibalism and a struggle to survive. This is a truly strong movie which stays with you after it's finished. It's far from a feelgood movie, but it's extremly good and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Now I can't wait to see the next movie that Pippa suggested to me.

Josef Mauritzson - Höstens Färger feat. Linn Höglund

I just realized that I almost never post any music in Swedish here on beats, breaks & big smiles 2.0. I really don't know why, even though I'm the first to admit that the majority of what I listen to is in other languages. I think that with exception of Swedish punk rock, I never listen to songs in Swedish. Time to go a different route. The video of the day is my friend Josef Mauritzsons video Höstens Färger. The song is about a strong memory from Josefs darkest days when he was trapped in his abuse of alcohol and drugs. He was out picking mushrooms with his father when he all of a sudden stopped seeing colours. Everything around him was in a greyscale and he was sure his last moment had arrived. But he survived and have now been drugfree for 8 years. And now came the time when he felt he was ready to record this song. And what a song it is! I got goosebumps from it and couldn't stop watching it. I've always known that Josef was a good producer, but here he also shines as a lyricist. And what about the soulful vibes from Linn Höglund! Here we have a talent to look out for in the future.

Triune Gods

I've been a fan of both Scott Da Ros and bleubird for quite a few years now. So what could make me more happy seeing them joining forces together with Japanese emcee Sibitt? Not much. What we have to look forward to is Triune Gods debut album Seven Days Six Nights that drops in the middle of January next year.

Review: This is a movie that I've been wanting to see ever since it first came out a few months ago, but I haven't got around to it until today. So did it hold up to my expectations? Yeah, it did. It was a warm and sweet movie which put me in a good mood. Which was what I really needed after a kind of crappy weekend. But back to the movie. I totally recommend everyone to see it, it was really good. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are excellent in this one, and Mark Ruffalo is also making a very good performance.

I'm Still Here

Review: I just watch the mockumentary that chronicles a year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix life. I guess most people already know about this movie. Joaquin publicly annonunced his retirement from acting and then tried to pursue a career as a rapper. During this time we also got to witness the downfall of this man through drugs, fights and so on. In September this year the director, Casey Affleck, announced that it all was fake. And now the movie is here. The thing is, and I guess a lot of people say this after they found out, but I never really believed in the story. Sure, I truly believed that he quit acting, but the rapper thing? No way. But that is really besides the point. Is it a good movie? Well, it's interesting and well done, but at the same time it feels like a bit of a waste of time. Especially seeing it after the truth came out. But still, Joaquin is a good actor and a fascinating character so it was worth watching.

Review: Just like I said the other day, I was looking forward to sinking my teeth into The Colour of Magic. Now I have, and what can I say? I have a constant smile whenever I see the creations of Terry Pratchett and feel really satisfied with life. It's humour, warmth and wonderful characters and sceneries is a true treat. I only wish there was more to see now. Fortunatly Christmas is only about a month away, and then I can watch Hogfather again.

An Idiot Abroad

I wrote about the show An Idiot Abroad about a month ago. After seeing the first episode I wasn't very impressed and didn't really know if I was to see the rest of the episodes. But I must say that the show, and Karl Pilkington in particular, grew on me. And today I watch the final episode. I won't really miss it, but it was fun while it lasted.

Yes, it's true. Beans from Anti-Pop Consortium signs to anticon. 
The album End It All hits stores February 15 next year. TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe sings on one track, and Four Tet, Clark, Tobacco, Nobody, Son Lux, Interpol's Sam Fogarino, and Bumps (the drum section from Tortoise) all contribute beats to the 13-song, 33-minute album.

I very seldom listen to Looptroop Rockers nowadays. Or to be more precise, I haven't listened to them at all since they added Rockers to their name. But still, I just saw this video today. The guys wrote this song after the racists got into the Swedish Parliament less than 2 months ago. I like the song and the message, so here it is.

Review: I must admit that I discovered the joys of Terry Pratchett quite late in my life. But as they say, better late than never. A few years ago Sky One made an adaptation of Hogfather which I fell totally in love with. It's now a part of my yearly Christmas tradition to watch it. 2 years later, in 2008, The Colour of Magic came. It was an adaptation of the two novels The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. I have totally missed that one I'm afraid. A mistake I will make up for these next couple of days. But to get back to the subject. This year the third installment in adaptations came, Going Postal. I just watched the two episodes, and I must say it's a treat. Not quite as good as The Hogfather but nevertheless a true joy to watch. I really love the magic of the Discworld and the humour of Terry Pratchett. I really look forward to sinking my teeth into The Colour of Magic now!

The Killer Inside Me

The Killer Inside Me

Review: This is an adaptation of Jim Thompsons novel of the same name. When it got released it instantly got a lot of attention due to its graphic depiction of violence, especially against women.  And it is a brutal movie, but at the same time I've seen way worse movies when it comes to that, and the violence in The Killer Inside Me never really bothers me. It's too clean in some way. And that is somehow the problem with the movie itself. The actors are doing a good job and it's a quite beautiful movie in some ways. But it never touches me, and when the movie ended I already began to forget about it.

Going Postal

The first snow of the season outside combined with violent winds. A really good reason to get cozy indoors and to watch the first episode of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. I'll get back to you when I've seen both episodes. All I have to do now is brew me some nice hot tea.

Worst Book in Ages!

Even though I'm not a fan of AC/DC this post is not really about them. I'm currently reading the book AC/DC Maximum Rock and Roll by Murray Engleheart and Arnoud Durieux. And I just have to say. This is by far the worst written book I've read in a long time! It basically Murray and Arnoud sucking AC/DCs dicks for over 500 pages. Not the least bit objectivity in this book. Every single sentence is the authors worshipping every breath of air the Australians have ever taken. It could have been a good book about a musically important band. But in the hands of these groupies every page is a pain to read!
