Interview #12 - k-the-i???
Not Keeping It Simple
You’ve been making music and records for quite a while now. Would you like to give us some background history and maybe something about yourself in general? When did you get into making music, and how did your career start off?
Well I'm originally from Cambridge, MA but I now reside in Los Angeles, CA for the past 6 years aside from staying in Europe for 8 months a year ago, lol. I have 4 official k-the-i??? releases and gang of features.

Pretty much back in 1999-2000 I was the kid on SoundClick, mp3.com and many other forums, chats and all other outlets promoting my music back then. I sent out countless demos until Tony from Beyond Space reached out to me for my first official release. A year later Robert Curcio reached out to me about releasing a record on Mush Records, I haven't looked back since. But to fully answer your question, I been making music since 1993 when I was in 8th grade. But I didn't take it seriously until my last year of High School in 1997.
What do you want to accomplish with your music?
Same as always. Just getting people to listen to my music because I feel like I have something different and original to offer. Since I've started, my name has been growing so I pretty much feel like I've accomplished most of what I've attempted. I've never been greedy so to ask for fame and fortune wouldn't be me, not to mention cliche. Lol. If it happens, it happens though.
How would you describe your music and could you briefly tell us about the music-making process?
I'd describe my music as genre-less or a better analogy, If all the music genres had an orgy and conceived a child out of the debauchery it would sound like my music. Lol. Yeah I went there. Haha.
As a producer I have to go through the steps first. Either look for my samples first or I create smooth synth lines first depending on my mood and where I want to take it. But it usually starts off with me listening to all types of different music to get my brain ready, then i dive in.
What are your influences?
My family and friends, Broadcast = The greatest band to live ever!!! (R.I.P.) Trish Keenan, Stereolab, Buddy Holly, Beirut, the 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's etc… You get my point. I love music. Lol.
You just released the album Synesthesia at Fake Four Inc. How did you hook up with those guys and will you be releasing more music on that label?
Ceschi set that up. He asked me a while ago if I was interested in releasing music on Fake Four. He suggested releasing my first instrumental record on Fake Four and I was totally down for that. Ceschi was one of the first artists that openly gave me respect years ago, so I'll always respect him. We started our careers together on Beyond Space Ent, so we go back. As for future releases, I hope so, but there isn't anything concrete as of yet. To be honest, I feel like I'll be releasing more music on Fake Four, now that I think about it.
How come you decided to release a strictly instrumental album?
It's a side of me that I've been trying to dive deep into for some time now but I never had time to pull it off until now. I feel like my instrumentals offer a new tasteful original sound to the
beat scene(s). Not to mention it's about time that I show people that I'm more than just an emcee. I mean who knows….. On my next record I could be strictly singing, lol. I like to get my Mike Patton on and change every record.
What else do you have got going on at the moment? Any other works in progress?
I'm working on wrapping up my next rap record on Mush Records. Also produced a record for my homie Verble on Grimm Image. I'm producing a slew of songs for many artists and remixing a gang of music, you'll see. Lol. This year is mine. For sure!!!
Do you have any musical memories that you’d like to share with us, that has meant a lot to you?
I don't even know where to start. The Fake Four Festival that went down a few months ago in LA at the Echoplex. It's the first time I met the Fake Four team and to see how welcoming everyone was made me feel like they’re the label everyone should be fucking with. The formula works.
Another memory was playing a big ass festival in Lyon, France called Riddim Collision with my homie Walter Gross, there was thousands of people there, me and Walter got on stage and melted the festival. From that point on, I got a European booking agent and a steady growing fan base in Europe.

Gescha - Crayon Politics
I have to admit that Gescha is a completely new name to me. Lucky for me though he reached out to me last week and hooked me up with his album Crayon Politics. Some people might know Gescha from The Intelligentlemen. This is the first soloalbum from this Canadian artist and it's a good one. Gescha got a really nice flow and the productions that are done by Factor and Muneshine holds a high level of quality as usual. It's a really nice album with a laidback summer feel to it, and I can envision myself nodding along to this album in my hammock. If I had one that is. Gescha surrounds himself with some nice guests such as AWOL One, Gregory Pepper, Moka Only and Kay the Aquanaut. But he don't really need them to make this a good album. It's solid from beginning to end, and I know that I will bump this one quite a lot this summer. Wanna check it out? Review: I finally got around to watch The Adjustment Bureau. I've been wanting to see it since I first heard about it, but at the same time couldn't really be too bothered to do it until today. And it was good. A bit predictable perhaps, a bit cheesy, but at the same time very entertaining and very well made. Kind of like a light version of Inception. I liked it.

DJ Shadow @ Göta Källare
Watching DJ shows is rarely something I do. It's no real excitement watching a DJ standing there behind his decks and mixers all night. And I think that is something that DJ Shadow knows too. So when he comes to Stockholm for the first time he brings his Shadowsphere and blows us all away with not only his music, but also with brilliant visuals. To get a little taste of what it was like I here post a clip from an earlier show. The sound is so-so, but you'll get an idea about the visual effects. Verdict regarding last night? Two thumbs up.

Review: Priest is based on the Korean comic of the same name. A priest disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece. I stole that last sentence from IMDB. Couldn't be bothered to come up with anything on my own. The movie is not really worth any brain activity. Anything redeeming about the movie? Well, it looks ok at least.

Face Candy - Waste Age Teen Land
This is kind of a tricky album to review. Tricky because it was one of the last things that Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen recorded before his tragic death last year. It's always a bit of sensitive ground to tread on. I liked This is Where We Were when it dropped in 2006. At that time the group consisted of Eyedea, Kristoff Krane, Carnage and Mazta I on vocals and J.T. Bates and Casey O'Brien on bass and drums. Since then Carnage and Mazta I has left the group so on Waste Age Teen Land all the vocals are done by Eyedea and Kristoff Krane. What we are getting is freestyle on top of improvised music. All 4 are masters of what they are doing, and it's a joy to listen to them. But at the same time it's music that never really captivates me. I enjoy the freestyle flows and the pure brilliance behind them, but as a record I soon get bored. This is in no way a bad record, far from it. It's wonderful to see a bunch of artists doing exactly what they love. But at the same time it's not a record I will listen to much in the long run. Perhaps just not quite my cup of tea.

Gel Roc - Beautiful Tragedy
Gel Roc is an west coast legend who's been around for quite a while, dropping both solo stuff as well as being a part of EX2 and Three Eyed Cowz. He's just about to release his new album Beautiful Tragedy on Abalano Records and it's a treat of lyricism and great beats. We get 16 tracks of classic west coast underground productions, and great guests such as Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Neila, Joe Dub and Awol One. The thing that this album might lack is those stand-out tracks, but the level overall is very high. This is hip hop that is way better than 99 % of what's out there today. Support good music and creative artists, buy this album when it drops on June 14th.

A Band of Buriers - Stuffing a Chest with Twigs

Review: I really don't know what I think about this movie about one of Sweden's greatest musical legends of all time. I mean, the acting and the script is good. It's nice to see Hans Erik Dysvik Husby (more known as Hank von Helvete from Turbonegro) doing such a great portrayal of Cornelis. But somehow the movie is lacking something. It feels a bit shallow and it doesn't really grab your attention. Too bad, I had hoped more. Still worth watching though.
