The Chicharones - Swine Flew

There's something about Josh Martinez's voice that always makes me happy. There also used to be a time when whenever I heard something from him I knew it would be good and interesting. He's always been able to combine humour with skills and interesting lyrics, but with time I must say that I have listened to him less and less. Not because he's gotten worse or anything. More that he's own twist of comedy hip hop sometimes just gets too much. Perhaps the reason why I never really fallen for The Chicharones lies in there somewhere. The combination of Josh and Sleep is on one side a good combination since they're both very talented. But it always ends up being too much party and bullshit about it all which makes me a bit tired to be honest. I know that this sounds like a diss of Swine Flew, but that's not my intent. It's a good record, but there is nothing about it that will make me return to it. Good but plain.

Misanthrop & Aqua Luminus III - 6 Years Later EP

Back in 2006 Misanthrop and Aqua Luminus III released Leinwand EP on Audiac Records. So there is a good reason behind the name of their latest offering, 6 Years Later EP. These two producers are known for their dirty beats, vocal samples and heavy scratching and this release is no different. 8 tracks of very high class no matter if they're strictly instrumental or not. There is one track that stands out from the rest though. 20 Stories Later is a smoking production featuring some of my absolute favourite emcees out there today; 2Mex, Ceschi and James P Honey. Just listening to these guys on one track puts a big smile on my lips and isn't that what all good music should be about. This is yet another strong release from Equinox Records, and I urge you all to pick this one up.

Perseph One - Nikola's Spirit

When I listened to prison soup's tape last month, I really got enticed by Perseph One's guest spot. I had never heard of her before, and just wished that I would be able to hear some more stuff from her. And someone seems to have answered my prayers, because just a few weeks later I stumbled across this brand new release from her. Nikola's Spirit is quite the listening experience and perhaps not something that everyone would like at first. But dig a little deeper and you will find weird and wonderful soundscapes that are truly atmosperic and gripping. It's a nicely mixed bags of instrumental tracks and poetic vocal driven ones, where you realise that she's both an amazing producer as well as a great lyricist. It's lo-fi, it's a bit twisted and it's really really good. Don't believe me? Go here to find out for yourself.

Frietboer - Freemoo

I first discovered Frietboer from the Netherlands when he released You Were Murdered as a Kid together with Brad Hamers under the name dust on snow last year. Since then I've listened quite a lot to him, and he have released quite a few gems through out the years. His latest, Freemoo, consists of 12 tracks and most of the instrumental. Frietboer is one of those guys who have the ability to create great moods and atmospheres on his own. His music goes perfect in a pair of headphones helping you to make the world around you just a little more beautiful. Do yourself a huge favour and go here to download the album for free. Good music are meant to be spread so treat yourself to some nice sounds for the summer.

Aesop Rock - Skelethon

I can't remember when a release on Rhymesayers Entertainment excited me the last time. It must have been Eyedea & Abilities amazing album By the Throat. But apart from that RSE is a label that leaves me cold nowadays. Up until now, because who can not be thrilled by a new release from Aesop Rock? He's been one of my favourite emcees and artists ever since he dropped Float back in 2000, and he's one of the few artists that never disappoint me. I have to admit that I wasn't too sure about him hooking up with RSE, but after the first listening to Skelethon all those fears are gone. What we get is classic Aesop Rock and the album is full of bangers. Welcome back man, we have missed you!

Hökartorget - ADHD Skalle

It's not very often that I write about Swedish artists here, and definitely even less about guitar based groups singing in Swedish. But this time I can't help myself. The group Hökartorget is a beautiful pop band from my hometown who actually makes me feel at least a little bit proud to come from there, and that's no mean feat. ADHD Skalle is the soundtrack to this summer.

Open Mike Eagle - 4NML HSPTL

I think that the first time I heard Open Mike Eagle was back in 2008 as a part of Thirsty Fish. I really loved their album Testing the Waters and it was then obvious what a talent on the mic OME was. The talent haven't disminished since then either, quite the opposite. He's a good representive of the next generation from Project Blowed. An amazing emcee with styles and lyrics galore. I wasn't really surprised when I heard that he had hooked up with Fake Four Inc. for his latest solo album. Unfortunately I wasn't that surprised either that I found 4NML HSPTL as a bit of a sleeping pill. Don't get me wrong, it's a mighty fine piece of art that OME have created together with UK producer Awkward. As quite often nowadays, the productions that are very popular in underground leftfield circles, are not my cup of tea. They don't do anything for me, and not a single song on the album makes my head nod approvingly. Feel free to check it out though, I actually urge you to. Artists such as Open Mike Eagle need more time in the limelight in a world filled with fake personas.
