The Green Hornet
The Green Hornet
Review: Superhero movies. Can't stay away from them. I don't really have a relationship to The Green Hornet, but I had to check it out nonetheless. I liked it. It was funny and the chemistry between Seth Rogen (who also co-wrote the script) and Jay Chou was enjoyable. Didn't quite see the point of Cameron Diaz in the movie though, but hey, you can't everything. I'm also so incredibly glad that Christoph Waltz got to play the bad guy instead of Nicolas Cage as it was intended. He would most definitely have screwed it up big time with his overacting. All in all, The Green Hornet was a laugh, and sometimes that all you need.

Cyrus
Cyrus
Review: Cyrus was better than expected. What I thought was going to be a straight up comedy, actually had some warmth and humanity in it. Wouldn't have been as good though if it wasn't for the cast who is perfect for this movie. John C. Reilly is always doing a good job.

The King's Speech
The King's Speech
Review: Some movies you just don't know what to write about. You feel that you don't really have the words to do it justice. So I will write a very short review. The King's Speech is the historical drama about King George VI, his sudden rise to the throne, and his battle with a bad stammer. The cast is wonderful, the characters warm and complex and the mood is just right. All this I'm writing when all I really should write is: The King's Speech is, hands down, one of the best movies I've seen in years. See it!

180° South
180° South
Review: This is one of those documentaries that I probably would have missed without friends suggesting it. 180° South is about how adventurer Jeff Johnson retraces his childhood heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins journey to Patagonia. This movie basically consists of three major elements in my eyes. One part enviromental eye-opener, one part free spirit thinking and one part historical storytelling. The cinematography is simply mindblowing. So many beautiful nature scenes captured amazingly. I liked 180° South. The characters was charming, the sense of adventure was contagious and the soundtrack was superb.

Big Up Kaj!
I just want to take this opportunity to lift my hat and salute Kaj Kindvall and his radioshow Tracks. Today he's broadcasting it for the last time. This is a show that have existed for 26 years. I haven't listened to it for ages, but when I was young in the 80's this, together with it's predecessor Poporama, was the programmes that in many ways helped shape my love for music. Thank you Kaj!

Freakonomics
Freakonomics
Review: This documentary is based on the book Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything written by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. Five different documentary filmmakers are all making short segments about different ways of seeing the truth, or finding it. Amongst others we get to hear about corruption inside sumo wrestling, Morgan Spurlock looks at how the names we are given at birth affects our lifes and one segment is dealing with an experiment in the Chicago public school system to offer cash incentives to students to improve their grades. The movie is entertaining, in a light-weighted kind of way. Like how one reviewer described it "intellectual snack food". What I think is good about Freakonomics though is that it makes us think and question the facts we are given in life. And often, most people need to hear about it in an entertaining, Michael Moore kind of way.

Battle for Haditha
Battle for Haditha
Review: When a friend told me about this movie I got kind of a Restrepo-vibe from it and got interested. Then when I saw that Nick Broomfield had made it, I got a bit sceptical. This is after all the man behind the documentaries Kurt & Courtney and Biggie and Tupac. But my fear of this being sensationalist crap did not come true. And even if the movie has a documentary feel to it sometimes, it isn't. It tells the story about the Battle for Haditha. In November 2005, US Marines fell into an ambush by Iraqi insurgents and one officer got killed. The reprisals by the the Americans were frightening, resulting in the massacre of 24 people, many of whom women and children. I like the movie. It's strong, it's disturbing and it shows more of the reality of war than most movies out there.

Worried About the Boy
Worried About the Boy
Review: There are few people from the 80's that are more iconic than George O'Dowd, more known as Boy George. This BBC Two production however only focus on his early years, the years before he became famous. Even though a movie about his entire life would be very interesting to see, this one is still worth checking out. The music, the details, the atmosphere. It's all very well made and I like it. And 17 year old Douglas Booth in the role as Boy George is really extremely good. Now I have to pick up Take it Like a Man, his autobiography. I'm sure I'm in for an interesting read.

Never Let Me Go
Never Let Me Go
Review: I'm no sucker for happy endings, so when I'm offered to watch a dystopian movie I usually like them. This one is based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. I haven't read it, but I like his earlier work such as The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans. The movie is well made and has some really good actors in it. Carey Mulligan who I liked in every movie I've seen her in, but especially Andrew Garfield who was brilliant here, just as he was in Boy A. Unfortunately the movie never really captures me. Can't really say why, but it ends up being nothing more than a descent movie. See it for yourselves though.

Review: Does anyone remember the days when the name Robert De Niro signified some kind of quality in the movie world? I remember. It was however quite a long time ago now. While actors like Michael Caine is the master of underplaying, De Niro nowadays seems just to be going through the motions. Edward Norton is good though, even if he looks stupid in cornrows. What about the movie? Not bad, but nothing special.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere
I've been a fan of Neil Gaiman for quite a few years now. I've read almost everything he's ever made and watched movies and tv series based on his stories. But for some weird reason I've never got around to watch Neverwhere. This mini-series from 1996 have totally been missed out on. Embarrasing. But tonight I will change that by watching the 6 episodes.

Review: It felt like a good way to start Sunday off by watching the latest movie from DreamWorks. And it was. Megamind was actually quite funny. Just what I needed today.
